Director of Payments

Our client, a rapidly growing financial technology company developing a leading self-custodial, multicurrency wallet, is seeking an experienced Director of Payments to join their expanding global Payments team. This is an exciting opportunity to work with a forward-thinking company focused on empowering people to navigate the digital asset economy securely and confidently.

This role is remote, with a preference for candidates located in the Eastern Time Zone (ET).

Role Overview

Reporting to the VP of Payments, the Director of Payments will play a key leadership role in driving the company’s payment strategies and operations. This is a highly visible position requiring strategic thinking, strong execution capabilities, and excellent leadership skills.

The Director of Payments will be responsible for overseeing payment cash management, business intelligence, and payment fraud risk functions. The successful candidate will lead strategic initiatives and engage directly with executive leadership to drive growth and innovation in the payments domain.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and manage a highly skilled and engaged Payments team through talent development, coaching, and performance management.

• Develop and execute short- and long-term payment strategies and operational plans aligned with company objectives.

• Define payment objectives and key performance metrics to drive payment innovation and operational excellence.

• Provide strategic and operational oversight of payment functions, including payment fraud strategies and vendor partnerships.

• Ensure compliance with all applicable payment-related laws and regulations through regular reviews and analysis.

• Contribute to the payment roadmap and support the development of payment-related features and user experiences.

• Identify and mitigate risks within payment operations by evaluating and optimizing internal processes and controls.

• Analyze, implement, and optimize payment service levels and key performance indicators (KPIs) to enhance overall performance.

 

Candidate Profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Finance or a related field.

• 5 to 7 years of experience managing payments and/or risk functions.

• Minimum of 5 years of experience in payments or the gambling industry (preferred).

• Strong knowledge of payments laws and regulations, with a demonstrated ability to ensure compliance.

• Solid understanding of financial industry operations, including card processing, networks, and back-office functions (e.g., Wire and ACH processing).

• Proven leadership skills, with the ability to make decisions, resolve conflicts, and develop highly engaged teams.

• Business acumen and adaptability to thrive in a fast-paced, ambiguous, and rapidly evolving environment.

• Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.

• Excellent communication skills (verbal, written, and presentation).

• Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and implement process improvements.
