Despite its adversarial position towards the industry, China unexpectedly ranks as the second-largest employer in the crypto sector among Asian countries, according to researchers.

According to the latest findings from K33 Research, the cryptocurrency industry currently boasts an impressive workforce of nearly 190,000 talented individuals as of July 2023. This represents a significant surge in employment numbers compared to the pre-2020 era when the crypto frenzy began.

The employment count in the crypto sector reached its peak in 2021, with nearly 211,000 individuals actively contributing to the industry. This surge in numbers aligned with the remarkable surge in cryptocurrency prices and company valuations during that time, as highlighted in the report.

Underscoring their pivotal role in the industry, approximately one-third of the crypto workforce is employed at exchanges or brokerages. These professionals play a crucial part in facilitating crypto transactions and ensuring smooth operations within the industry. Moreover, an additional 26% of employees are actively engaged in diverse financial services related to cryptocurrencies, further showcasing the industry's broad scope.

It is worth noting that NFTs, while highly discussed in popular media, currently employ only a modest 6% of individuals in the crypto field. On the other hand, an impressive 21% of professionals contribute their valuable skills to blockchain protocols, analytics, and mining operations, indicating the continued importance of these foundational elements in the cryptocurrency ecosystem.

Lastly, the remaining 13% of employees occupy cryptocurrency-related roles that do not neatly fit into any of the aforementioned categories, highlighting the industry's versatility and evolving nature.

The analysts behind this comprehensive report employed various robust methodologies, including LinkedIn searches, artificial intelligence-assisted web searches, and meticulous manual mappings, to obtain the most accurate and up-to-date data on the cryptocurrency workforce.

Crypto companies typically hire remotely to reduce costs

The organizational structure of large crypto companies seamlessly enables remote work, leading to a highly diversified workforce spread across the globe, as highlighted by K33.

Extensive research reveals that numerous prominent crypto companies strategically select jurisdictions with advantageous regulations and lower tax rates to establish their headquarters.

These companies demonstrate a global employment approach, either by setting up local offices worldwide or implementing a fully remote work model.

By adopting such headquarters, these organizations effectively address cost-cutting measures and eliminate logistical obstacles, demonstrating their astute decision-making capabilities.

Notably, Binance, a leading example in the industry, has its headquarters situated in Malta, even though a mere 0.2% of its employees originate from this island nation.

Chinese professionals still contributing to crypto in a big way

The Western world enjoys a significant dominance in the crypto industry, boasting an impressive majority of approximately 55% of crypto workers residing in North America and Europe. Leading the charge is the United States, accounting for a noteworthy 29% of the global crypto workforce.

Turning our attention to Asia, it is noteworthy that India has emerged as a prominent force in the crypto industry, employing an impressive 20% of the regional workforce, particularly in developer-related roles. Even in the face of China's historically adversarial stance towards cryptocurrencies, it remains a formidable player, securing the position of the second-largest employer in Asia with a substantial 15% share of the regional workforce.
