Bitcoin Soars Amid Speculation of BlackRock's Insider Insight
June 23, 2023 · By Blockchain Headhunter
BlackRock Inc.'s unexpected filing for a US spot Bitcoin exchange-traded fund last week has triggered a wave of similar applications from competing issuers, fueling speculation that the asset manager possesses crucial insights that could result in the approval of its application.
Since the filing, Bitcoin has experienced a remarkable surge of over 20%, surpassing the $30,000 mark. In a swift response, Invesco Ltd. swiftly renewed its application for the physically-backed Invesco Galaxy Bitcoin ETF, closely followed by WisdomTree's filing for the WisdomTree Bitcoin Trust with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Bitwise also entered the scene with its own plans for a comparable vehicle.
This rush of applications follows BlackRock's attempt to launch the iShares Bitcoin Trust, which was submitted to US regulators just last week. Given BlackRock's position as the world's largest money manager, overseeing approximately $9 trillion, the filing is regarded as a signal that the SEC may finally grant approval for a physically-backed Bitcoin ETF—an arrangement that the regulatory body has consistently rejected, citing concerns such as fraud and manipulation within the spot market for the token.
"When the largest asset manager in the world makes a move of this nature, other issuers naturally take notice due to the high stakes in the Bitcoin ETF race," noted Nate Geraci, president of the advisory firm The ETF Store. "Thus far, there have been no clear indications that the SEC is prepared to consider a spot Bitcoin ETF. The prevailing assumption is that BlackRock may be privy to certain information."
In addition to the impressive Bitcoin rally, the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (ticker GBTC) has experienced a significant narrowing of its discount on net asset value. This positive development has prompted industry proponents like Cameron Winklevoss from Gemini Trust Co. to champion the digital currency, especially in light of the challenges it has faced, including scandals, bankruptcies, and regulatory actions.
The growing momentum for a spot Bitcoin ETF is part of an ongoing trend, despite previous rejections. Bloomberg Intelligence has recorded approximately 30 attempts for such a product. With BlackRock now entering the scene, it is expected that even more attempts will follow, according to Dave Abner from Dabner Capital Partners.
Confidently stating the outlook, Abner, who serves as a principal at Dabner Capital Partners, an ETF and crypto advisory firm, predicts, "Everyone who had a filing is going to resubmit, and those who had been considering will also want to be filing soon as well."
