Crypto Exchange Binance.US Trims Workforce Ahead of Expensive SEC Battle
June 17, 2023 · By Blockchain Headhunter
Binance.US, the American affiliate of Binance Holdings, founded by the esteemed Changpeng Zhao, has recently undergone a strategic reduction in its workforce in light of an anticipated legal battle with US regulators. Although specific details have not been disclosed, a spokesperson for the company confirmed the job cuts, aligning with earlier reports from Reuters, which cited an unnamed source stating that approximately 50 individuals were affected.
In a letter addressed to employees, exclusively obtained by Bloomberg News, the company stated that its board had instructed management to downsize teams throughout the organization in preparation for a potentially protracted and financially demanding litigation process. Binance, known for its virtual structure and absence of a headquarters, designates Miami as the primary location for Binance.US, as noted in the SEC complaint.
In recent developments, Binance.US announced that it faced disruptions from its payment and banking partners, compelling the company to transition into a crypto-only exchange.
Last week, Binance.US, along with its parent company Binance Holdings Ltd., which operates the larger Binance.com platform, came under scrutiny from the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The SEC accused the entities of mishandling customer funds, providing misleading information to investors and regulators, and violating securities regulations. Both Binance.US and Binance Holdings have contested these allegations.
On Tuesday, Binance.US and the SEC reached an agreement to collaborate on a solution that avoids a complete freeze of assets on the cryptocurrency trading platform. Binance.US emphasized that a freeze of this nature would effectively render it unable to operate.
