Defi developers' salaries resist bearish market conditions
July 4, 2023 · By Blockchain Headhunter
Amidst market turbulence and crypto market meltdowns, average DeFi engineer salaries displayed a resilient surge, reaching approximately $180,500 by the end of 2022, as revealed by data from Durlston Partners.
DeFi developers have not only thrived amidst market turbulence but have also been enjoying substantial financial rewards during these challenging times.
Despite the highs and lows experienced in the cryptocurrency industry, particularly in the DeFi sector, professionals in this field have remained resilient. Even during periods of "crypto winter" when digital asset values plummet, DeFi workers have managed to stay insulated from the downturn.
Recent data published by Durlston Partners on July 3 confirms that these individuals are still commanding six-figure salaries, showcasing the remarkable strength and potential of the DeFi sector.
Throughout 2021 and 2022, DeFi engineers consistently earned impressive salaries, ranging from £100,000 ($126,695) to £125,000 ($158,369) on average each quarter. Even in the face of market meltdowns and significant bankruptcies in late 2022, average salaries soared to as much as £142,500 ($180,541).
These findings were based on a comprehensive analysis that involved studying job openings in the global blockchain industry, conducting surveys among companies and investors, and gathering insights from industry experts.
Talent scarcity influencing high salaries in DeFi
DeFi developer salaries defy the bear market with unwavering confidence and robust compensation packages. According to a report by Durlston Partners, the scarcity of specialized talent in the DeFi sector has created a fiercely competitive environment where employers are offering enticing remuneration to attract and retain top-notch professionals.
Despite the wavering confidence in crypto companies and the market freeze, experienced engineers have proven to be indispensable for maintaining seamless business operations, resulting in stable salaries within the DeFi realm. Durlston Partners highlights that as the DeFi industry matures, the demand for individuals with extensive expertise and experience is increasing, leading to even higher paychecks.
The trend of rising salaries is predicted to persist throughout 2023, as the crypto market recovers and companies regain stability. With engineers becoming increasingly scarce and sought after as valuable resources, Meraj Bahram, the managing partner at Durlston Partners, anticipates steady salary growth in the remaining months of 2023, building on the momentum witnessed in the last quarter of 2022.
Salaries in DeFi vs. Web2 firms
When contrasting salaries in the DeFi industry with those in Web2 firms, the variances at the entry level are negligible. During the initial phases of one's professional journey, remuneration in both sectors tends to be relatively similar.
According to Indeed, the mean yearly salary for software engineers at Google stands at an impressive $146,985, while Facebook surpasses it with an average of $189,416, indicating a higher compensation rate.
Job openings in DeFi
Abundant opportunities await in the industry, as revealed by DeFi Jobs. An enticing senior engineer role awaits at OKX, catering to a quant trading platform, offering a remarkable salary of up to $247,000. Equally enticing is the chance to become an infrastructure engineer at OAK Network, a prominent layer-2 blockchain project, with an exceptional salary potential of up to $250,000.
