Elon Musk's X edges nearer to cryptocurrency payments via freshly acquired state license

September 2, 2023 · By Blockchain Headhunter

Rhode Island's regulators have confidently granted X (Twitter) a currency transmitter license, a significant milestone in the company's expansion into the financial services sector.

This license is a mandatory requirement for companies engaged in financial activities on behalf of users, encompassing transactions involving both traditional and cryptocurrency assets. With this approval, X is now authorized to safeguard, facilitate, and exchange digital currencies.

The Rhode Island Currency Transmitter License for X received the green light on August 28, as confirmed by the Nationwide Multi-State Licensing System (NMLS).

This development represents a major stride towards Elon Musk's vision of transforming X into an "everything app," encompassing both cryptocurrency and traditional fiat payments.

While initial reports suggest that X's forthcoming payment feature will primarily support fiat currencies, Musk has made it clear that he's directed X's developers to design the platform's payment system to seamlessly incorporate cryptocurrency functionality in the future.

This approval comes on the heels of X securing money transmitter licenses in Michigan, Missouri, and New Hampshire, all of which were granted on July 5. X now boasts transmitter licenses in a total of seven U.S. states.

The specific financial services X will offer upon launching its payment features remain undisclosed. However, insiders familiar with the company's plans suggest that initially, X will provide fiat currency transaction services similar to PayPal, a company co-founded by Musk, with a clear pathway for future integration of cryptocurrencies.
