Prosecutors unequivocally demand a sentence of 40–50 years for Sam Bankman-Fried, the former CEO of the now-defunct cryptocurrency exchange FTX and a convicted fraudster. Despite facing the prospect of up to 110 years in prison, the government remains resolute in its pursuit of justice.
In their comprehensive 116-page sentencing memorandum presented to Judge Lewis Kaplan on March 15, prosecutors meticulously outline Bankman-Fried’s egregious transgressions. They meticulously detail his involvement in illegal political contributions, attempted bribery of Chinese government officials, banking misconduct, efforts to deflect accountability, and numerous obstructions of justice.
While Bankman-Fried evaded charges related to illegal political contributions and bribery due to extradition constraints, the memorandum emphasizes his failure to genuinely acknowledge his pivotal role in FTX's collapse and the subsequent loss of customer funds.
The prosecution steadfastly argues for several enhancements to Bankman-Fried’s sentence, underscoring the gravity of his offenses. Drawing parallels with infamous financial criminals like Bernie Madoff, the document underscores the magnitude of Bankman-Fried’s betrayal. It poignantly includes victim testimonials, illustrating the profound impact of FTX’s demise on countless lives.
Bankman-Fried’s conviction on seven charges, including wire fraud, securities fraud, and money laundering, further underscores the severity of his crimes. Despite his plea of not guilty, the prosecution stands unwavering in its pursuit of justice.
A sentence of 40–50 years, coupled with an $11 billion judgment, is deemed essential by the prosecutors. It ensures societal safety by preventing Bankman-Fried from perpetrating further fraud while aptly reflecting the gravity of his offenses.
