Three Arrows Capital's NFTs amass $10.9 million in sales through Sotheby's

June 18, 2023 · By Blockchain Headhunter

Confidently, Sotheby's in New York announced that a set of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) previously purchased by the bankrupt cryptocurrency hedge fund Three Arrows Capital has been sold for an impressive $10.9 million. This hedge fund, which filed for U.S. bankruptcy a year ago, had invested $15.5 million worth of cryptocurrency in these 37 NFTs during July and August 2021, as revealed by data from blockchain tracker DappRadar.

The highlight of the auction was the sale of "Ringers #879 (The Goose)," part of a collection of 1,000 computer-generated abstract images by Canadian artist Dmitri Cherniak. Originally acquired by Three Arrows Capital for approximately $5.9 million in August 2021, this particular NFT fetched an astonishing $6.2 million at the recent Sotheby's auction.

Michael Bouhanna, head of digital art and NFTs at Sotheby's, expressed his enthusiasm for the growing interest in NFTs, noting that more traditional art collectors are beginning to recognize the quality and allure of these digital assets. He emphasized that although NFTs exist solely in digital form and can be viewed online by anyone for free, several items in the auction were accompanied by physical print copies, allowing buyers to display them proudly.

It is worth noting that Three Arrows Capital, based in Singapore, was one of the first major cryptocurrency firms to declare bankruptcy in 2022, following the collapse of cryptocurrencies Luna and TerraUSD. The NFT market experienced a meteoric rise in 2021, driven by surging cryptocurrency prices and the belief among technology enthusiasts that digital assets would hold significant value in online virtual environments.

However, the speculative frenzy surrounding NFTs has since subsided. In May 2023, NFT sales amounted to approximately $675 million, a significant decrease from the peak of $5.7 billion in January 2022, as reported by DappRadar data. Notably, Seven of Three Arrows Capital's NFTs had already been sold for $2.5 million at a previous Sotheby's auction in May, further demonstrating the ongoing interest in these unique digital collectibles.
