Web3 Faces a Gender Diversity Issue
September 1, 2023 · By Blockchain Headhunter
Web3 companies are forging ahead with groundbreaking innovations in the metaverse, blockchain, and crypto spheres. However, it's crucial to acknowledge that one critical aspect remains tethered to outdated norms: the stark underrepresentation of women among founders and investors. This status quo poses a risk to our mission of creating an online world that challenges, rather than perpetuates, the biases ingrained in our physical reality.
Enter BCG X, the dynamic tech build and design unit of Boston Consulting Group (BCG). In a strategic collaboration with People of Crypto Lab, an innovative studio dedicated to championing diversity, equity, and inclusion within the Web3 ecosystem, we have embarked on a mission to dissect and analyze the gender diversity landscape among founders and investors. Our study delves into a comprehensive Crunchbase database encompassing nearly 2,800 participants from around the globe.
The results paint a concerning picture:
- Female representation in Web3 startups is alarmingly low, with only 13% of them having a female founder. Moreover, within this minority, just 10% of founding teams include both men and women, and a mere 3% have exclusively female teams. These figures lag significantly behind the startup industry's average.
- This gender gap extends to the broader workforce of Web3 startups. Approximately 27% of all employees in these companies are women, but they are predominantly concentrated in non-technical roles, such as HR and marketing.
- When it comes to funding, the disparity becomes even more pronounced. All-male founding teams, on average, secure nearly four times the funding compared to their all-female counterparts, amassing almost $30 million versus approximately $8 million. Remarkably, among companies that have raised over $100 million, there are no instances of all-female founding teams.
These statistics underscore the urgent need for greater gender diversity and equality within the Web3 sector, both in leadership and funding opportunities.
These findings boldly highlight a critical issue that has often been obscured in previous research. While many prior studies focused on mixed-gender teams, our analysis takes a deeper dive by examining all-women founding teams. The results are striking, as they reveal a direct correlation between the degree of female involvement and various performance metrics. Notably, all-male teams tend to excel in securing funding, mixed-gender teams with both men and women fall in the middle, and all-female teams face the greatest challenges. In light of these findings, it becomes evident why many women may hesitate to participate in or invest in tech startups. The persistent underrepresentation of women carries significant consequences, supported by a growing body of BCG research indicating that companies with diverse leadership teams exhibit superior innovation and profitability.
The gender disparity within the Web3 ecosystem carries profound implications for how individuals present themselves online, conduct business, and engage with one another. Consequently, the ramifications of the current underrepresentation may surpass those experienced by earlier-generation web-based businesses. For brands and digital platforms venturing into Web3, which has predominantly been shaped by white men and predominantly caters to white men, failing to address this issue from the outset represents a substantial missed opportunity for business and monetization. Notably, the default avatar choices in the metaverse often skew towards male, white, and cisgender options. It is imperative that Web3 offerings are developed by diverse teams who possess an intimate understanding of the lived experiences of their target users.
The great news? The Web3 ecosystem is still in its early stages of development, which means we have a golden opportunity to address the issue at hand. Here are the essential steps we can take:
- Measure Everything: The crucial initial step is comprehensive and objective measurement and reporting of diversity representation in the entire Web3 ecosystem, encompassing company founders, employees, and investors. We cannot effectively solve the problem until we have precise data quantifying its scale and the rate of progress over time.
- Ensure Women on Investment Teams: Substantial data shows that unconscious biases can influence funding decisions. To put it plainly, all-male investment teams are more inclined to support all-male founding teams. Given the growing institutional emphasis on gender disparities in technology, some venture capital firms now mandate that investment teams include at least one woman.
- Design Inclusively: Companies entering the Web3 digital landscape should make sure they create a wide range of experiences for the most extensive possible audience, prioritizing inclusivity in their brand experiences.
- Foster a Supportive Ecosystem: Companies must invest resources and effort to create robust, diverse, and inclusive networks that female founders and investors in the Web3 space can tap into. Mentorship, provided by both women and men, plays a particularly vital role in opening doors for aspiring female founders and investors. Additionally, Web3 summits and conferences should commit to sponsoring events that actively work towards achieving gender parity among speakers, with an initial target of at least 30% women speakers.
- Collaborate with Regulators: Governments and non-profit organizations are increasingly focused on environmental, social, and governance issues, including gender diversity in companies and industries. Companies and investors have a unique opportunity to proactively collaborate and influence the development of these regulations, rather than merely reacting to them.
Thanks to the tireless efforts of movements like #MeToo and the broader women's rights movement, society is now more aware of gender biases than ever before. Web3 represents a significant leap in technology since this awakening, yet the investment landscape still leans favorably towards men. Creating a Web3 ecosystem with diverse startup investors, designers, and more isn't just a moral imperative; it's absolutely crucial for business success and the future of innovation.
